Eyelid Surgery

Brighter, more youthful-looking eyes await with an eyelid lift

Plastic surgery of the eyelids, also known as blepharoplasty, can improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. The first area of the face to show signs of aging is often the eyelids, giving a tired look. Undergoing a blepharoplasty can provide you with a rejuvenated appearance, making you look more rested and alert.

What can I expect?

Eyelid surgery is recommended for:

  • Excess eyelid skin, obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, which may impair vision
  • Puffy upper eyelids, making one appear tired
  •  Excess skin and wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • “Bags” and dark circles under the eyes
  • Lower eyelid droopiness

  • Blepharoplasty
While blepharoplasty can help to improve these problems, other eyelid/brow treatments can rejuvenate the areas surrounding the eyes:

Droopy eyebrows can be lifted with a surgical ‘brow lift’ or Wrinkle Relaxers. The fine wrinkles beside the eyes, referred to as “crow’s feet” can be treated with Wrinkle Relaxers. Laser resurfacing or chemical peels can also improve fine wrinkles and tighten lower eyelid skin. Dark circles beneath the eyes can be addressed with fillers (such as Juvederm and Restylane) or PRP. Dr. Karl Schwarz and his group of nurse injectors can help you decide which option is best for you, based on your needs and expectations.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed through incisions in the creases above the eyelids. Excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle is removed, creating a cleaner looking upper eyelid and a more youthful look.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be done using two different incisions. The incisions can be made on the inside of the lower eyelid (“transconjunctival blepharoplasty”) or just below the eyelashes (“subciliary blepharoplasty”). In both cases the sagging skin is tightened (either by laser or by trimming the excess), fat pockets commonly removed, and muscles tightened. Ultimately, a blepharoplasty will make your eyes look refreshed, giving you a more rested appearance.

Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect 10 days to 2 weeks of recovery time. The scars will fade over the course several weeks/months, eventually becoming barely visible. The results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting, and you can expect them to last 10-15 years.
